LBS are more compelling when they react to dynamic data. The changing location of the user (obviously). The changing weather. Flight delays. Even the changing location of a user's friend.

Learn how to use dynamic data to make your LBS more compelling. Join gurus from data provider Navteq and LBS developer uLocate for a live Talk to the Guru session in this thread.

Thursday, May 29 9:00 AM California time. Translate to your time zone.

Welcome, gentlemen. And welcome to the Forum Nokia community members who are live with us as well. Feel free to ask anything that comes to your mind, either now during the live session or later if you read the thread asynch.

I'll start things off here with a question for Steven. Being on holiday this week in the US, and having just driven from Tucson, Arizona to Rolla, Missouri, I'm quite aware of highway and city traffic. What traffic data does Navteq provide?

Hope you were not caught into a jam on the highway.

NAVTEQ offers both real-time and historic data. The real-time data includes traffic flow data and incident data. The real-time data is delivered via RDS or XML live feed. So, if you hava personal navigation device or navigation application on your cellphone that take the traffic data, you will be guided to avoid the traffic jam and will never be caught.

Hi, I'm Carl Snellman from Nokia. I'm working on the new Location API JSR293 which defines exciting new tools for developers to do LBS apps. Shoot me any questions if you want to know about the new API or existing Location API 1.0 (JSR179)

The WHERE Developer Program provides a framework for publishing a variety of location content and services. For developers, we include built-in tags for dynamic geographic data such as maps and driving directions along with handset-specific APIs for aGPS, cell tower, and other forms of carrier location technologies.

NAVTEQ Traffic Mobile is most relevant to Nokia developers. You describe it as real-time traffic designed to meet the needs of application service providers who serve consumers over wireless networks. Mobile is delivered via binary data feed to enable efficient delivery over bandwidth constrained wireless networks.

If you are a member of NN4D, you can log into NN4D.com and navigate to the Development Resource tab, where you can find the developer guide for Traffic data. You can also request to download the sample historic data in XML formats and use it for your development. The developer guide will give you a list of attributes, etc.

We are redesigning the NN4D portal to include more traffic related matters. You will find more information about the traffic data on NN4D site very soon.

Can you paint any generalities about how your developers use the APIs for dynamic data? Do they typically mobile existing data they deliver on a web site, build new services and house the data on a server, build new services and deliver data directly ot the mobile devices ... ?

The XML feed is one of the ways to deliver the real-time traffic data to a server, where the application can incorporate the traffic information into the internet application that display traffic or into a routing application that servers the mobile client.

The binary data feed to the mobile was designed to server those cell phones that do not have the data services.
