Hi,
I have installed the impronto simulator for linux. My problem now is how to import the required jar file for me to be able to use this. I mean, what is the exact import statement needed? I tried running my application, and it gives me an error that the required jar file was not found in the java runtime path... Can anyone help me with this prob? I really need help asap.. so please do help me.. |

Hello
I am in the dying need of the Impronto simulator. Please if someone can tell me how to get it, I will be really thankful. I have tried sending mail to ROCOCOSOFT as mentioned in their site, but they havnt contacted me yet. Also if there is any other simulator similar to the impronto that i can use for J2me bluetooth. What is so special about their emulator? Which mobile phone(s) do you target? I would go for an emulator of that phone.

I am pretty new to this, but...
I believe the Impronto simulator allows one to write JSR82 compliant code and implement it on simulated Bluetooth devices in a simulated Bluetooth enviroment without the hassles or worries about specific hardware implementations or bluetooth stack issues. This should make the first step in program development easier, although requires subsequent development on a specific device emulator or on an actual device. I was able to obtain a "hobby-iest" license for the Impronto simulator. Unfortunately, the only things I can get to run on the simulator are the examples which came with the simulator. These examples all reference proprietary rococosoft API's (i.e. "import com.rococosoft.impronto.utils.UUIDs") and I have not figured out how to get these API's. (Any help in that regard would be appreciated.) Possibly it is because I do not have the proprietary API's that my code will not work, but I don't know. In any case the problem I have is that my program does not engage the simulator but rather engages the native BlueTooth hardware on my computer. Apparently there are two different methods for launching your application so that the simulator is engaged (as per the SimulatorUserGuide.pdf supplied by RococoSoft), but I have tried both of these and neither of these worked. I have also tried disabling my BT hardware, but then I get a Bluetooth exception state error. Unfortunately, there is no forum for impronto users, that is why I ended up posting this here. If any impronto users have any suggestions, I would be most appreciative. Thanks, Jim |

And you get Impronto specific issues … why not starting with Sun WTK, Nokia SDK or Sony Ericsson emulator?

LOL. Yes, you are right, now I do have Impronto related issues.
So perhaps I should have jumped to a device specific emulator as you suggest. But from the Impronto advertising which I read, I didn't think I would have any Impronto related issues, so it seemed like it would be "easier" (and it was free). Perhaps, I am just making a simple mistake in my implementation with Impronto. If I find an easy solution, I will post. JIm |

Well, if you really need a cross-platform one, than start with the one of Sun. Even if your project is academic, better go for a specific emulator matching a real device in your vicinity for showing the reality. Making a cross-platform MIDlet with Bluetooth is near to impossible (today), depending on what you have to do. Thanks to zillions of issues even in the big player OSes … going for an emulator (with its bugs) no one uses (except Sony Ericsson) does not help, or? JSR-82 seems to be extremely complicated; for academic I think it is sufficient you understand two implementations (your own and the one of your target).

Thanks, it is probably good advice, but for now...
I got the Impronto to work pretty easily (once I figured out the issue). While the free license does not provide full documenation for the Impronto API's and show you where these external libraries are and what each one contains(which would have helped), they appear to be included. (I am not sure how to check if "everything" is included though...) Anyway, these jar files are scattered around inside various subdirectories within the "ImprontoSimulator"[home directory}. To get to them, I can use a DOS batch file to launch a shell enviroment where I can then set the appropriate CLASSPATH to find these external jars. The downside is that since I don't know what classes are defined in what jar, I just have to provide access to them all... thanks, JIm |
