Hi All
Does anyone know if anything is planned to develop an api / jsr that allows you to use a phone's camera to read a barcode. I know that Symbol have (or will during this quarter) release their MC35, which has this feature (unfortunately the device runs a Miscrosoft OS which I really want to stay away from). The obvious reasons for this are the cost of a bluetooth barcode reader (which I am currently using) and the fact that users need to carry around an extra device. Thanks Steve |

I see how it can be a problem for RFID, but surely for the visual side of it, the cameras resolution should currently be good enough???

Many Nseries S60 phones already ship with (include) a barcode reader app.
And it is also available as a separate download. Here, for example, is the N80 version: http://europe.nokia.com/A4149142 |

Hi Petra
Thanks for the reponse. Can J2ME app's access this software? Steve |

I doubt it. It is a native S60/Symbian app, and as far as I know, with no published/exposed callable APIs for other programs.

Hi Petrib
Thanks, I thought so, that is why JSR257 is necessary. In my case just the visual component. Regards Steve |

Hi All
Just to let you know I was at the local launch of Symbol's MC35 this morning, the phone does use the camera to read barcodes (I made them show me and tried it myself). The phone is not shipped with a JVM, this does not surprise me as I have yet to find a stable, standard JVM for the pocket PC environment i.e. one that runs applications without having to modify them. I REALLY don't want to have to re-develop the app I have aready done in Visual Studio (half the fun of developing J2ME Apps has been NO Microsoft Required) Any word on JSR-257??? Regards Steve |
