How to reduce the size of recording audio/video -

Hi
I write some codes to record audio/video.But I find that the file for saving them is a little large.For audio, the file size grow rapid is about 6~7k/sec and for video is about 10~12K. Is there any way to reduce the size of record? For example, just like compress the file after recording Or during recording, ruduce the file grow rapid to about 3~4k/sec for audio, 7~9k/sec for video. Is it possible? Please help me...
