how to avoid beep sound when sms recieved -

hi,
I had register with a port number using push registry in my application and when the application recieves sms on that port when it is not active my mobile is making an beep sound indicating that 1 item recieved to my application and on pressing ok it is showing the sms i recieved from that particular port. hence what i want is my application should recieve message when it is not active without making any beep sound or even showing any alert box. is it possible if possible help me how?
