Hi i was just woundering if there was an application out that was able to browse the contents of other bluetooth phones over the OBEX File transfer protocol. Also if there is none out would it be possible to write the software and if so what APIs would I need.
Cheers in advanced |

Availability
Probably there is something like that already, do not know, perhaps someone else knows that. Possibility (Java MIDlet) This should be possible with avetanaOBEX, kXML, JSR-82 and JSR-75, however, JSR-75 requires signing to be useful and signing is complicated when it comes to portability across operators. Furthermore you need the OBEX or the Bluetooth FTP specification. Possibility (Symbian OS native) I am not the Symbian OS/S60 or Symbian OS/UIQ guy, so do not ask me about that. Feasibility A bit of work as you have to read, understand and need a lot of testing devices (many behave, well, buggy). Samsung and Sony Ericsson phones come with this feature on board, so this is something for Nokia and Motorola devices. Furthermore, the Bluetooth FTP service requires authentication (passkey), so this is nothing two individuals will or should run. On the other hand, it is more convenient to push data from the other side and UPnP in Nokia Wireless LAN devices is more common. Great project for a final exam. Commercial success: Do not ask me. |

Cheers for the info. I used to own a SE and my mate has got a samsung which is the main reason i was intrested in developing one (for nokias mainly) I will probably start it for my own phone first (N95) and then post the source for people to test. All i have to do now is find the time to sit down and start planning it.

well... i have been working on a similar objective.
A SE phone allows you to transfer .jar files out on other phones while Nokia doesnt let you do that (Except N-Gage). So we are trying to let a user transfer .jar file using bluetooth using some kind of Obex - FTP. Well, do you think there can be any issues with respect to its implementation? Are there any existing turn arounds to this like unlocking some codes? |
|
Did you try sending the jar file from the SE to the Nokia because it might be some security feature to stop viruses spreading. And have you tried sending the file directly from the nokias file manager
