Hi all, i 'm wondering how to make navigation sw (like tomtom) to work with 3rd edition internal GPS antennas (eg. nokia N95)....
It would be possible do develop a sort of "fake GPS device" to let tomtom think to speak with a BT GPS ? I mean a sort of proxy fake GPS to emulate the gps device enumeration of tomtom software with the real internal device of N95 ? It is only an idea but maybe it could have sense... Thanks!! |

What would be the point on doing this ?
As far I could see, location things should be made as some-kind of add on modules, but I haven't seen any docs about them, thus making then propably requires partnering with Symbian or Nokia, or maybe with both. yucca |

the point is to make actual version of Tomtom working win internal N95 GPS receiver ! (and not only with external Bluetooth antennas)
It is a matter of GPS device detection by tomtom... |

hmmm, I actually didn't know that it does not work with the intrnal one, anyway, I think the company should actually fix it themselves, since its shouldn't be that hard to start using the LSB API really.
And for me it looks like they are not using it at the moment, thus there is propably nothing that could be done by any other party than the original developer. yucca |

same news for GPS simulator?
I look for a GPS simulator , to send (from other fone live received ) lat/lon to TomTom , to see the position from friends . someone knows where I have to look for? |

At this moment I don't know who is responsible for making the internal GPS receiver working or not with TomTom Navigator 6. This is what TomTom told me:
-------------------------------------------------------------------- Response (Boy D. (NL)) 15/01/2008 07.15 PM Geachte Mr Helering, Yes it is exactly as you just discribed it. Met vriendelijke groet, TomTom Customer Support Team Customer (Roberto Helering) 13/01/2008 03.35 PM --------------------------------------------------------------------- Hi, Does it mean the GPS build-in is locked for other applications like Navigator 6? If this is the case please let me know and I will open a support incident with Nokia in order to make it "open source" (as Symbian OS is based in a open source project I doubt this guys had locked the GPS module, but still to be proved). Regards, Roberto. ----------------------------------------------------------------------- ----------------------------------------------------------------------- And this is the crap I received from Nokia: ----------------------------------------------------------------------- Dear Roberto, Thank you for emailing Nokia Care. With regard to your email, I am unable to advise on the compatibility to Tom Tom as I do not have the required information. I would suggest that you check with the device manufacturer for further information. However, we do take into account that the requirements of our customers may differ and have forwarded your feedback to the appropriate departments for future consideration. Kind regards, Kalaiselvam Nokia Care ----------------------------------------------------------------------- Is the GPS-built in module in the Nokia N95/N95 8GB open to allow third party applications (like TomTom, Route66 and others) develop their applications and be able to make their products compatible with the N95 GPS built in? As you can see, if the GPS built-in is not open, then other will never be able to develop their applications to be used with that GPS-built in module (that would be a Nokia failure or something that Nokia has decided to "lock" in order to NOT allow others use the GPB built-in module). I hope my question is clearer now. BTW: In case I'm right and the GPS built-in module is locked for others, are you planning to "open" the module in the future? I was wondering that because Nokia always says it's an open source company, that won't be the case (please don't misunderstand me). Thanks. Roberto. ------------------------------------------------------------------------- The point is none of this guys is taking this issue seriously and none of them is taking responsibility for their customers that want both products work together. ![]() Like I said, might be interesting to know if the internal GPS receiver is "locked" for third party applications or if it's open. Roberto. |

AFAIK it is open, just try the LSB API and check whether you can get your location with the internal GPS, I'm sure you can.

Geachte Mr Helering,
Yes, it is exactly how you say it, the internal GPS cannot be accessed directly through a COM port and thus those applications that are designed to handle only external GPS devices will not be able to access it. There are however other ways of obtaining the information from the GPS chip but since you do not appear to be a software developer I am going to spare you the details. If you are really curious have a look at http://www.forum.nokia.com/lbs It is up to the software developers to adapt their applications to the provided specifications and I am sure that in time they will do that.
