It's been so long I've been thinking about this issue and I don't see any real discussion about it.
OK, first of all I must say I'm a happy owner of a nokia n95 phone. Very good product. What I am dreaming to see for so much time is a camera that records gps information (long.,lat.) in a exif tag of the image. I think that would be so useful, because most of the time I'm taking pictures of things and places I couldn't possibly place on a map myself. It would be so good to upload the images on my pc and automatically watch where that picture was taken on (for example) google earth using intrinsically held information (i.e. exif). Professional camera makers don't do this yet and there are no cameras with built in gps in market. But I think the n95 can do this with some software development. Hardware-wise it is ready because it's got a quality camera and a gps receiver and I reckon that exif is also made for receiving gps info (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Exif#Geolocation). What do you think? Is there an official email where I can request this feature to nokia? I read somewhere about ideas@nokia.com but searching through the site I didn't find this address anywhere and I don't think it is a valid one. Thank you. |

Alright, as a reply to myself I found some info while googling.
I found two applications that promise to do (almost) what I'm asking for. First one is Shozu. The problem with this app is that in order to geotag an image it has to be online at the time you take the picture because it uploads it directly to the shozu servers. This would require a fixed dataplan over gprs or 3g, if you don't want to spend millions, but for me this is not an option as from what I know there are not a lot of these kind of contracts here in europe. Second app I found is this one, Locr. Now this one is better because it lets you manually geotag your photo whenever you like without an internet connection. So, in theory, you can take a picture, geotag it and then go home, upload it on google earth and see where that picture was taken... in theory. The problem with this app is that it holds the geographical info not in an exif tag but as comment attached to the image. This is probably made so that you have to use their website in order to see the images on the map, unless you copy/paste manually the coordinates for example in google earth, which can be done for lets say 10 pictures but it becomes really stressing for more. So untill now, there is no software that does exactly what I'm searching for. Geotag an image, writing geo info in the appropriate exif tags, when taking a picture without the need for an internet connection. I renew my request, please nokia do this with the built-in camera software! It can be done, others are almost there! |

Hello dresnu,
the latest version of the locr GPS Photo application does now use the Exif header to store the GPS location infos. Regards |

Hi,
What you're searching for is a Nokia Location Tagger application (can be downloaded from Nokia Beta Labs site, http://www.nokia.com/betalabs/locationtagger). AFAIK, location tagging will be integrated with Camera application in new products. BR |

Hi issit true that you need to be online in order to geo-tag the image? According to what I researched, it doesn't seem so. I tried to install Shozu to my camera but I couldn't get it to work to test it out. Can someone please tell me if Shozu allows you to geo-tag even though u are not online at the time you take the picture?

My example should be able to be used without being on-line, if the GPS locationing method would not need it.
