Ron,

Last week the winners of the Europe, Mideast and Africa region for the LBS Challenge were announced at the Mobile World Congress show. The ceremony was held about 15 walking minutes from the conference center in the Spanish Village built for a 1929 worlds fair. Great setting for the stand-room only crowd.

My congratulations to the winners; the competition was tough. The region had submissions from 11 countries, with 70% of the entries including social networking features and 40% including navigation. The grand prize winner was UbiSafe from UbiEst. The company describes the application as a personal security LBS that families can use to verify and track family member’s position on maps, send and receive emergency messages, set up personalized safe zones, and create a “virtual leash” for preventing children from moving out of sight. They were rewarded with a 35,000 Euro cash prize and licenses worth a total of almost 500,000 Euro from NAVTEQ, deCarta, and ptv. See prize details here.

We've got a great deal for everybody who can make it to the LBS Code Camp in Singapore, and an even better one for those who can't make the trip. We have arranged with Navteq data expert Ejaz Iqbal for an on-line discussion of mapping tools and data, including formats, manipulation, available cities, and sample sets. Ejaz will be on line live from 11:00 AM to 12:00 PM Thursday, February 28, New York time (GMT – 5). That is early in the morning just before the code camp. Attendees at the camp can participate in the thread during breaks, on the train home, or from a hot spot at the airport. He will then return during his Fridayreturn to answer questions after the day of instruction. The discussion will occur in this thread, so be here next Thursday, or at least subscribe to the thread.

My name is Min-woo Kim and I'm I&IWorld CEO. I&IWorld'S Realtime Fishing LBS Contents LBS(Location Based Service) based for Mobile and WiMAX(Wibro) and IP-TV. We're planning to service our contents in Singapore and USA. As you know, there are many people enjoy fishing in East Aisa and America. We strongly believe that I&IWorld's Realtime Fishing LBS Contents will be the Killer App for Nokia Mobile.

My question is this. Realtime Fishing LBS Contents supply fishing information and underwater topographical map data to enduser. If we have a Fishing Place's Underwater Topographical Map Data, how we display Navteq map data and Fishing Place's Underwater Topographical Map Data? Can we edit Navteq map data to express The Fishing Place's Map with a Underwater Topographical Map Data? If you say yes, how can we do that? For example, layer and attribute with a Autodesk(or ESRI) engine.

Which sponsor's LBS engine is being supported Nokia mobile N95? We want to know these Engines include Autodesk and ESRI. And we want to receive that information at some length and contect with these sponsors interested in I&IWorld Realtime Fishing LBS Contents.

The question of "how" in this context is where you will make your money! ;-)

The most obvious solution (at least, to me) in this context is to leave them as separate entities. Presumably, you already know the location (latitude, longitude) and polygon area of the bodies of water that you have underwater data for. You can use the NAVTEQ data for describing, routing and imaging around the body of water, and then "switch" to an underwater view when the user is interested in the underwater topography.

The only LBS Challenge sponsor for the Asia Pacific competition that supplies a mapping engine is Autodesk. Although deCarta, ESRI and Where (and Autodesk) sponsored the North America competition. And deCarta and PTV (and again Autodesk) sponsor the European competition.

Not all of these sponsors have "map on-board" tools, but by far the most common use of mapping data on mobile phones is "off-board".
