Is this possible with python? a form with a combobox and an edit doesn't really cut it.

Ideally I'd like a modeless version of appuifw.selection_list() in a tab with a permanent search box. The user can choose from the list or enter freeform text that narrows the list.

I'd hate to write a custom extension for this ...

Form with combo box is not possible with present extensions.

Also same is for a permanent seach box. You can have a temparory one by setting seach_field = 1 in the below line

index = appuifw.selection_list(choices=L , search_field=1)

You may want to add a feature request so that future release may perhaps have this.
