As a note, be aware that each device supports its own (sub)set of audio formats, so you should always check these to be sure that your audio formats are actually supported by your target devices.

However, be aware that even if the device natively supports a bunch of audio and video codecs as listed in the specs, it does not mean that a J2ME MIDlet can play them all via media APIs. It is actually, quite likely that only a subset of the supported codecs may be handled from a MIDlet.
