real time drum machine (sequencer) -

Hi,
I have some questions about using midi in Java ME. I would like to create a little drum machine for the mobile phone and it should be possible to interact (change the speed, change the rhythm pattern) in real time while the sequence is played back. I will keep it as simple as possible so the length of the tone sequence will be just 8 tones. When I tried to write a first test version, I got the feeling that graphical components like checkboxes, textboxes and to many commands drastically slow down the application when I test it on my Nokia s40 6500 slide. On computer in the emulator, everything works fine of course. Would it be better for the performance if I use Canvas or CustomItem? Should I use the shortMidiEvent() or the longMidiEvent() method for playing the tones? For timing, is it better to use System.currentTimeMillis() or Player.getMediaTime()?
