Preview images - yes. However the images have to be loaded fully and then resized - which contradicts the speed.

Of course. You just have to guess where those Video Gallery generated thumbnails are saved in your version of S60 device. Good guesses would be:
E:\My Videos (E.g. 3rd FP2 phone N85)
E:\Videos\<somevideodir>\_PAlbTN\<170x128> (Some old 3rd devide, E70?)

I'm currently wondering the same problem. If you find some cool solution for this finding video-thumbnail problem, let me know it!

As far as I understand, those thumbnails are only created once the gallery (application) is launched. So they might not always be there.

I think you are right. And I think it must be exactly Video Gallery to get video thumbnails.
