I want to develop an app which needs to access the phone's microphone.

From other messages, I understand that the *only* phone that supports the Sun Multimedia extensions (MMAPI) is the 3650. I'd like my app to run on lower-end phones.

I'm quite suprised by this lack of support for MMAPI - I guess the low amount of memory in most phones means that stuff like memo recorder apps etc are out of the question, but it sure would be handy to be able to get at that mic for the app I have in mind.

Are there any possible hacks? eg would it be possible to write a small J2ME program that scans memory locations/ports in the phone & find out the location of the mic ? any other hacks/workarounds?
