why everybody's using HTTP?
why is it the best protocol for mobiles?

what if I download a huge amount of data but the tcp cuts me off at the last byte?

There are more prectical reasons I don't wanna disscuss, but main one is that MIDP 1.0. does not support low level comunication[but MIDP 2.0 yes] ;o)
