Unfortunately, dial up networking (GPRS/GSM Data) is the only function that works with 99.9% of Bluetooth adapters. To use PC Suite, you need to buy a Socket Comms Bluetooth adapter.

So far as anyone is able to determine, Nokia have designed their phones (or more accurately their software) so that they/it will only work with a Socket Comms Bluetooth adapter. These adapters cost up to 5 times as much as the average adapter and are only available in compact flash - so forget about using it on many machines without a handful of converters/adapters.
See http://www.socketcom.com/about/press/read.asp?ID=13

Nearly 600 people have signed this petition:

Although Nokia claim that they have seen other brands work, they refuse to give any other brand name except Socket. They will not even disclose what specification an adapter must meet so you can't shop around at all.

If you can prove me wrong, I would welcome the news. Bear in mind that Socket, Nokia and Digianswer adapters are effectively all the same therefore none of these count

I've seen Belkin work just fine, Nokia won't say that because Belkin changes their software around and depending on what version of software you get it may or may not work. See the problem is that while the specification is standardized the software is not, some vendors work with companies to insure interoperability, Socket is one of those. you should be petitioning the vendors to fix their software interoperability issues. Remember this simple fact, you are adapting your computer for bluetooth, the phone has it built in.

The Belkin Bluetooth adapters will work with the Nokia 3650.
Download the connection guide here (835KB)

Thanks Bluetoothian, will try and get hold of a Belkin adapter.

lynchusa - have you not read any of the 100s of postings on yhis site about connectivity problems? The vendors of my BT adapter have done their job and followed the same standard that 99% of other vendors followed and works with every other device I own.

Bluetooth devices should work with one another regardless of brand etc as they use STANDARD BLUETOOTH PROTOCOLS. Nokia claim that the adapter must support Digianswer profile/protocol. There are 2 problems with that - 1) Digianswer do not seem to be in business any longer and 2) Digianswer is not a STANDARD BLUETOOTH PROTOCOL.

If things had gone to plan, Nokia would be recommending their own adapter when you call them. After they took it off the market, they signed a deal with Socket to make sure they didn't lose out completely in the Bluetooth game. There was a good few months between ditching their product and signing up with Socket when they couldn't recommend anything.

Imagine the ridiculous situation if ethernet hardware manufacturers tried to pull same trick. The internet would certainly not be possible!!

I bought a Belkin USB dongle to connect my 7650. It didn't work. Nokia said...

"Ohh no.. Belkin doesn't work, you should buy the "Bluetake" brand tha works, we've tested it."

Finding a bluetake adaptor in Australia was hard enough. Finally finding the product, buying it, installing it... and bluetake use the same software as Belkin!

And sure enough bluetake suffers from the same problem as Belkin.

Cannot establish a connection to the serial port using bluetooth.

It's driving me insane. At one point, using Mrouter, I clickd all the check boxes and I had a connection on one of the ports. Started backing up my data when all of a sudden, I lost connectivity and haven't been able to re-stablish it since.

Bluetake, belkin, etc... it seems nokia have dropped the ball on the bluetooth product, it's a shame and a waste of time and money for me and I'm sure for the rest of you aswell.
