I have managed to create a 12 bit Master palette in Photoshop which i thought would enable me to optimize my png images correctly. The problem is, even though i can select my new 12-bit setting in the optimize window Photoshop only optimizes down to the colours that are websafe AND 12-bit. so i end up with a poor image.

Does anyone know if I may be doing something wrong or if i should be using another package to do this such as Paintshop Pro?

any help greatly appreciated

I am assuming you are trying to map a new image (Image A) to your Master palette, which there's a very high probability most of the colors in Image A is not availabe in the 12-bit palette. So, when the palette is loaded, the original Image A will be forced to be remap with the 12 bit palette and thus resulting in a bad image quality.

Would really love to see your *.pal file and your actual images to see the exact problem.

You can try Pro Motion - Cosmigo. It's an excellent pixel/palette editing software.

To the moderators of Forum Nokia:
I find it quite problematic when trying to explain answers or ask questions without the help of images. Is there any chance that the forum will be upgraded to let members upload image attachments so that we can easily illustrate the problem directly?

I know we can always upload to our own ftp servers, but not all of us have one, and it can be quite inconvenient.

Cheers,
YC

Thanks for your reply Yowchuan,

The files i have created are *.act and *.aco (for Photoshop)
would *.pal be a windows format? i noticed i only have them in Microsoft office folders.

I can email you the images i have tried. Basically any 24 bit image for now, but i am hoping there is a way of reducing the colours of this image using a custom algorythm (limited to 4096 colours or 12-bit). This would make things easier if i was to import graphics from a vector based package which always leaves anti aliased pixels that are not within my colour range.

I have now started creating my graphics pixel by pixel from my 12-bit palette which is fairly slow and I have less control over my results.

my email address is shooter@wwfmdpc.com, i will send you files.

thanks
