Hi all,
according to Nokia Java FAQ (url: http://www.forum.nokia.com/main/1,65..._37_10,00.html) in question Q33 ("Do Nokia phones support transparent PNG image format in MIDlets?") the answer is YES. I created a transparent PNG image with Photoshop which i save it in the "res" folder of my midlet (I use SUN's WTK 1.04). On the midlet properties i set MIDlet-Icon property to "/myicon.png". Running the midlet on a Nokia 7650 (ver. 4.46, the version that pops up with *#0000#), this icon has lost its transparency and has a white background on the pixels that they should be transparent. The icon has dimensions 32x32 pixels. Is this a normal condition or it can be fixed? Thanks a lot.

I don't think the icons can be transparent for some reason. The question from the FAQ refers to using transparent png's in the program/midlet itself, think the icon is treated differently.

I don't know about the 7650, but Series 40 phones certainly do support transparency in MIDlet icons. I've only had transparency working in PNGs with 256 colours or less. I'm using Paint Shop Pro 4.

Have you seen icons for other MIDlets on the 7650 that use transparency? On my phone (6100), the two MIDlets it ships with pre-installed both have transparent icons.

Graham.

No, actually i did not find any MIDlet that shows transparent icon on 7650. Most of them use an icon that covers all the pixel area of the icon in order to hide the transparency problem. Anyway, thanx for the response.

Yiannis.

My 7650 replaces transparent pixels with white pixels too. I think this is because it doesn't cause any problem when listing available midlets (because background is white), but looks strange when game is running, and the white pixels covers the purple/green/blue bar at the top. The only solution if you use smaller icon (about 18px height).

No aferreiro, unfortunately not. The best solution (i think) is the one kisember (just above your post) refer to. Use smaller icon (around 18px height).

Cheers, jfeid
