Yesterday i finally wrote some code to check the idea of direct pixel drawing in Nokia's phones. Before that i had read all threads in the forum concerning those operations most of them were halpful. After several tries I finally managed to change the PNG file into byte array (pixel format 4444) and store it into RMS file but here come some questions:

1. when i draw PNG onto the screen to finally read the picture and store it in an array (even if i create a fully transparent background for PNG) the image always has got white background. So when i store my png which is a picture with transparency, i loose image transparency (NOT GOOD).

2. The RMS file has some kind of a header nad i couldn't find out when my image starts in the RMS file. If someone knows please let me know how to find the begining of desired data in RMS file.

3. I come to a conclusion that small objects should be better stored in byte files but big screen images rather should be kept in PNG files. Why? here some numbers :
PNG image : 490 bytes after zip'ing 499 bytes
same image as the array: 685 bytes 254 bytes

so You can see now that little images are more suitable for storing into raw files than in PNG.

As for big whole screen Images the PNG's are in most cases 2-3 times smaller then raw data compressed (if no compression same images are 8 times larger then PNG's)

Here are my conclusions.
I would like to start a discusion concerning raw data images on the forum so anybody who has some thoughs please write.

1. Of course you loose trancparency after painting image OVER white canvas :) Of course you can process produced array and convert it to some ARGB format, but.. storing as ready arrays is much simpler, of course

3. Have you tried optimizing your PNGs? Good optimizers can dramatically decrease image sizes

Have a look here:

Drawing pixel arrays on screen MAY result in surprisingly slow results on SOME phones.
I am not saying that using arrays is bad, just be aware and be careful.
