I'm trying to build a pixel array from a .PNG file. What's the best way to do this?

The problem I'm having is that I load the PNG file but this img cannot be used by getPixels as the img is not mutable so basically I create another img using DirectGraphics(i.e. a mutable one) the same size as the loaded img, draw the loaded img onto this new img and then use getPixels to grab the pixels.

I'm sure this aint the best way to do this so any help would be great.
