Application Locks When Playing Sound -

Sometimes when I try to play a sound in my game application - the application locks-up and I can't escape (using the Series40 emulator).
Does anyone know a work around for this? I also tried putting the call to playSound() in a separate thread, and that did not fix it either. Thanks much for any ideas,
