A master is connecting to a slave using the serial profile. I have implemented the device searching and selection to be handled by my application, however, I would like to also handle the PIN code locally from within my app. Authentication will be set on at the remote side and this causes a window to pop up to input a pin- code. So I would like to avoid this popping up of the window. Has anyone done this before ?

This would be really neat. I maybe have need for same.

Anyone?

because it's annoying when dumb slave requests authentication and can't register security settings so you have to type code every time.

The request for pin code is to prevent people from connecting devices, etc. without authorization.

If there was a way to avoid having to enter a pin code, what exactly would the point be in having security options in the first place?

Simply "pair" the two devices you're using, and you won't need to enter a pin code after that point.

When you "pair" devices, it implies that the devices "trust" each other, and thus security isn't a problem.

Note that you can still encrypt, etc. the communications (although the strength of the current BT protocol isn't particularly strong).

Yes I realized that there is no point of having auth. if it can be overridden.
My problem is that pairing is no good because I think that the other device which is requesting auth is supposed to remember devices and their security settings, like bt headset , but it doesn't.

As far as I know, all of the Nokia models that support BT remember the settings, etc.

It sounds like the device you're trying to work with isn't a Nokia phone?

well for my requirements, i would hope that i can override the pin-code pop-up...

I would want to pre-program a pin code so that the user won't have to enter a pin-code..

so even if its the first time two devices , meet, as long as it has my program installed, the user would not have to enter a pin-code..

I know this would be a security issue, i hope the bluetooth spec would device a profile for this?

a scenario would be a client server system.. for example, a first time bluetooth client will just get data from a server.. in this example, it would be better if there was no PIN at all or a pre-programed PIN

... or something like an anonymous user on an ftp server..

May I choose PIN myself?

(If so, WRITE so IN MANUAL).

I consider the usefriendliness of supplied SF to be more than sufficient as a safety guarantor.

How about "pairing" by default?
Or just press "Yes" to confirm.

(Upgraded Nokia SF for 6230 3 times within 24 hrs from getting it, and the Engineers from Helpline now had to leave me for some "Kippis-time").

Yet to connect XP running PC with 6230....
