Hello!
Would it be possible to make existing Java enabled phones support JSR-75 by a firmware update? Or in other words: Would it be possible to create a firmware update, with which Java phones would support JSR-75? Thanks for your forthcoming reply! Regards, Relda |

Of course it would be possible technically, but I don't think it is every likely to actually be done (backported, tested and distributed like that).
In other words, you're only likely to see new JSR support with new phone models. |

Hallo! First of all I want to thank you for your answer.
My question has got the following reason: We are a project group of the University of Dortmund (Germany) which wants to develop an application for Java cell phones. Because we want to implement that for a huge group of user, we would like to prefer Nokia cell phones for the testing. But our application needs to access the filesystem which is not possible with standard J2ME (without JSR-75), because of the sandbox principle. To buy new cell phones (at least 2) with JSR-75 support, would burst our budget. So we would like to use our own cell phones. But these ones would need a firmware update to support JSR-75. Is there any possibility you or someone else can help us? Best regards, Relda The hp of our project group: http://mobicom.cs.uni-dortmund.de/pg466/index.htm |

I'm afraid that it is extremely unlikely that you could get a special firmware release developed and tested just for your project (or in general get JSR-75 support for any old phone in any way or form).
As far as I can see, your options are: 1: Buy new phones with JSR-75 support built-in. 2: Get a local retailer or the perhaps Nokia's German office to donate or lend you such phone. 3: Switch to C++ (and, e.g., a Series 60 phone which allows C++ apps), if possible. Might also mean buying new phones (depending on what phones you already have at your disposal). 4: Rethink your approach/application so that JSR-75 is not needed (in other words, implement some other kind of a Java program). 5: Develop the application and verify its workings in an emulator (without an actual phone), assuming there is an emulation environment with JSR-75 support. |

Thank you for your answer!
For all those of you who have the same problem: We finally found a solution at Siemens. They were interested and they already have a phone specific api for accessing the file system. (For older x55 and still for x65 phones) Best regards, Relda |

That, of course, won't help with your stated goal of "for a huge group of user" that you wanted; only those with this specific phone model will benefit. ;)
In any case, good luck with your project. |
