Dear all,

I am a final year student at the University of Edinburgh studying Electrical Engineering / Communications. For my project I am hoping to design an access point to allow mobile phones make calls over the PSTN.

The connection would be made to a base station via bluetooth and I would be using java for the controlling software. I would be using my Nokia 6230 as the phone in this case.

What I am wondering if it is possible to transmit / receive real time audio signals on the 6230 via bluetooth? I know of the headset profile, but in this case I would want the phone to act as the headset to communicate with the device that I would design to forward calls to the phone.

Other options would be to stream the audio backwards and forwards as the converstation would progress.

Would this be the best route to go, or any other suggestions would be more than welcome.

Many thanks

Sebastian

Hi,
If you read my post, you might know I am dealing with Bluetooth audio too as my thesis. Here I want to share some info I have collected so far, Hope it can help a little.

1. Bluetooth Audio - Nokia doesn't open API to access it.
Q: Do Nokia's phones support Bluetooth audio? Is there an API for it?
A: All the newest Nokia Bluetooth phones support Bluetooth audio. The Nokia 3600, 3620, 3650, 3660, 6600, and 6620 Imaging phones, the Nokia 7700 Media device, the Nokia 9500 Communicator, and the Nokia N-Gage™ mobile game deck support Handsfree Profile as an audio gateway. There is no API for phone-side applications to access Bluetooth audio.
----------This comes from http://www.forum.nokia.com/main/1,65...lopment-------

My possible solution (Don't know the feasibility yet):
- Access SCO link from serial port profile or other level
- Use ACL link to transmit voice data, not so real time anyway.

2. Since you use Java, suggest you looking at Javax.telephony package, I learned a little design from them.

Good luck

Hi,

Thanks for the information there. I've been sniffing about the Nokia technical documents and found information about the Cordless Telephony Profile which is spot of for what I am hoping to do.

However, now I am trying to find if the Nokia phones support this profile. It is pretty disappointing that Nokia hasn't released any API's for phone side access to bluetooth audio, nothing is ever easy in life...

Good luck with your thesis, if I come across any useful information I'll let you know!
