#1 Old Mr. Dugan or Enstedt Video Quality Resolved? - 2005-02-21, 17:43

Were the quality issues on System 40 video compressions ever resolved? Mr. Dugan had a solution but went offline. I have read his threads on increasing the bitrate on these files and it works! However this does break audio sync after two to three minutes. Can someone please tell me if a solution was worked out?

To sum up, tomdugan2 seemed to think that either a loseless join utility for these shorter 3gp files or at least a Nokia 3gp video playlist function would help playback 100Kbs 3gp. Mr. Dugan or Enstedt, can't you please help us on this? I have counted dozens of unanswered questions on this over the past month and you both did seem to be going in the right direction.

If there is no solution, can Mr. Enstedt or Nokia help code one as per the discussion? If not are there any developers here familiar enough with 3gp to code either a DOS 3gp join utility or a video playlist that System 40 will read? In the worst case, has anyone found another way to produce longer quality files maybe using Quicktime Pro?

Thank all here for your help.

I never heard back from Enstedt. Can't figure it out - one would think he would be interested in helping out. I have tried calling Nokia in the USA and Finland but can't get anywhere - I just don't think they are interested.

If we have coders here familiar with 3GP - we need a way to join short files to see whether longer files will still play in sync (indexing issue) or at least a or a video playlist so you don't have to manually start the next clip every two minutes. Any takers? If not, am I the only person here who thinks system 40 video needs some help?

Tom, I sent you an e-mail about this 15.02.2005, 11:29 AM GMT+2. Though, I don't know if you've read it.

It isn't about the lack of interest, but we are dealing with limited resources set by Series 40 platform + HW at the moment. As I told you, platform is already streched to it's limit. There simply isn't enough procesessing power to do what you're asking for. And there aren't any plans to implement any changes to the video player in the 6230 timeframe.

As I said earlier, Series 60 would be THE platform to develop things like this.

At least the latter option, ie. video playlist, is quite impossible to do, since it would require integration with video player software in the device. And as you know Series 40 runs proprietary OS and have no native access to 3rd parties to the system.

*Got it and replied with a sample file that worked.

>There simply isn't enough procesessing power
*Take a look at the clip I sent - it looks great!

SOLUTION / TEST: Join several two minute 96Kbs clips and see if a new header and index every two minutes keeps the file in sync. You need to send me a 3GP (h.263 / AMR) join utility (DOS is fine) to see if the idea works! If you can't do this, I will send the clips to you!

>video playlist, is quite impossible to do
*OK

>Series 60 would be THE platform to develop things like this
*60 needs to slim both size and cost to become more popilar. The 6320 is already there!

Nokia engineers please help us! Everyone here is asking for better quality video for the 6230, Mr. Dugan says he has a solution and no one is working with the guy! Yes we all understand that the processing power isn't there, but Mr. Dugan has said he has working solutions in three minute bites. Can't someone at Nokia work with this guy? Especially if what he said is true on indexing and all we need is a join utility?

Also others are now asking about video downloads and streaming for system 40 and there is no direction or help being given. Yes it might take a bit of legwork, but the end result would be more phone sales as people start buying Nokia for the media all of the people here could start providing!

We know you are busy and volunteer your time with us, and we LOVE what you are doing, but we are all trying to make the Nokia the media platform of choice! Please help us!
