Is there any information out there on modifying sound files so they sound better on certain mobile devices?

Speakers have characteristics like frequency response and impedence... could sound files be optimized for these characteristics?

A midi person once told me to fool around with volume and velocity on bass tracks of MIDI tunes to reduce distortion on Motorola C650, V180, V220... etc.

Digital audio files like Wav could be mucked around with in the same fashion... editing the content itself, or outputting different wav settings (e.g. bitrate).
