I want to connect my 7650 to a PC via the TDK USB BT adaptor. I want to run PC Suite to synchronize the phone with my Outlook contacts list. The PC is running Windows 2000 SP2. Will this work OK, and is there anything special I need to do?

Ideally, I would like to do this on a Windows XP Pro machine, but PC Suite says it will not work on XP. Is there a fix for this, or do I have to wait for an update of PC Suite? If so, where do I get it from?

Thanks

I'll answer myself, as no-one else has.

The thing you have to know is that the 7650 won't allow a serial connection from all but one bluetooth device. So once I'd paired the 7650 to the TDK USB, I had to force PC Suite to search the COM ports that the bluetooth device and the phone have been assigned to. That still isn't enough, though. Next I had to attempt a serial connection to the phone from "My Bluetooth places", which always attempts a connection to Com0, and which always fails. After this PC Suite just magically found the phone, and I could sync the 7650 to my Outlook files.

I managed to get the whole thing running under both XP and Win2K, despite the PC Suite installer warning me that it might not work for XP. A happy ending, but I'm not at all impressed that the 7650 is not really bluetooth compatible.

There are differences in the implementations of the Bluetooth software of different manufacturers, which may cause extra work in some cases. There are instructions in readme.txt of the PC Suite on how to configure the Bluetooth connection with e.g. 3COM devices.

I had problems initially too, though now its working. I found that the device manager thing thats in the system tray (which looks for a phone on the serial connection) was a red herring. I use the connection manager (i forget the actual names) from the system tray and check com4 (all others cleared) as the port which PC Suite should communicate with the 7650 over. In my bluetooth places i setup a serial connection and set com4 as the port. I open the connection (right click the serial connection -> connect) and then run pc suite.

I'm rather unimpressed with this process. I followed the docs, initially, to the letter and no joy. Binning the docs and trying to figure it out alone seemed to produce results.

Not tried sync'ing anything, though I do like the drag/drop way of shifting data.

PC Suite is a bit pants.

You get information on installation and configuration in the Installation Guide for PC Suite:
http://www.nokia.com/phones/productsupport/7650/guides_pcsuite.html

A most important thing to do is to set the COM port number. Check in your Bluetooth software which COM ports are possible for Serial Port connection. Then enable the same COM port number in mRouter (can be launched in the Windows taskbar or in the PC Suite | Control Panel | Connection).

As I mentioned earlier, the Bluetooth controller programs of different vendors may need special setup procedure (e.g. in 3COM case where you have to be careful with COM ports). That is mentioned in the readme.txt (you can find it under Start menu | Programs | PC Suite for Nokia 7650).
