I was toying around with my 6680 last night, and the built-in movie editor caught my attention. It allows you to edit 3gpp movies quite simply yet powerfully, especially for a handheld device.

Unfortunately, when I tried to add an audio clip to my movie, I discovered the editor can only handle amr files (the recording format of the phone's recorder). I was quite disappointed since I wanted to add some music I had in mp3 format.

Of course, there are several converters available for windows ( mobileAMRconverter ) and other platforms ( perl script ). But what's the point in mobility if you still have to use your desktop computer to do what you want ?

So I was wondering: would it be possible AND viable (and simple !!) to write a pys60 script/library that would allow to convert any mp3 file to an AMR counterpart ?

I have heard of pymedia ( www.pymedia.org ): can it be ported to pys60 or installed on s60 phones ?

Maybe there's a simple hack available, since pys60 already knows how to manipulate mp3 files as sound objects, and can record sounds as amr files. Could it be used to perform a "cheap" format conversion ?

pymedia is built upon FFMPEG and it is very unlikely that this can be ported to Symbian.

Nokia have a released a simple (no UI functionality) perl interpreter for S60. It may be a long shot, but maybe the perl script that converts music will work on that?

Did anyone ever try this? Does it work?

Is there any way to maybe play sound into a buffer, then record sound (in a different format) from another buffer?
(I wouldn't know... but if it's possible, I'll learn python just for that!!)

Thanks,
-R
