It seems from the other information on this forum that there's no way to get Java MMAPI to rotate a video (to play in landscape mode), and rotating the video at encoding time isn't practical.
So what other options are there for getting a video playing in landscape mode? Has anyone got experience with getting J2ME to launch RealPlayer, and then have control pass back to the J2ME app when RealPlayer exits? I'm aware that it looks possible if doing native programming (C/C++), but I don't want to go down that road if I can help it! Thanks, Lex |

redlex, you need to use Symbian C++ for this. There is no video rotation on Java ME and launching the native Real Player is not possible (only telephony application and browser).
Hmmm.. I have not tested what happens if you provide platformRequest an URL which contains a link to a page which then redirects to a rtsp stream (if you want to play a video from the device, this wouldn't help you, even if this worked...) Hartti |

Thanks Hartti - that's most helpful info...

hi Lex,
to be strict and correct: video (view port) rotation is possible in J2ME (as part of Adv Multimedia Supplements) and is available on other devices (don't ask which ones) than Nokia unfortunately. Only parts of Sound effects are being introduced recently in upcoming Nokia phones. See Hartti's blog post on details: http://blogs.forum.nokia.com/view_entry.html?id=226 regards, Peter |

Hi,
Have a look at http://www.versatile-media-format.com . There is a software-only java decoder for mobile phones. It can decode video in real-time in pure J2ME. And landscape mode is supported in software. However it works with a proprietary video format, not with 3GPP. So maybe this is not what you want. Regards, Nabil. |
