Hi All.
I am trying to stream video using Darwin Streamin Server (DSS) on nokia phones but without success. I have tried different operators (netcom norway, velcom belarus) but with the same effect. Phones were also different. On some operators (velcom) I can't even open any video streaming site (including swedish tv and bbc). On netcom - swedish tv shows good but test movie doesn't play (nokia N70). I can view video on the PC from DSS. I can even view video on PC using mobile phone as GPRS modem, but I can't view video on mobile. Phones shows that they are successfully connected to media server, show the length of the movie, but no movie appears, and after some time they disconnect. I have investigated logs, traffic and found that server successfully established connection through RTSP, and began to send bytes over RTP. But seems to me without success. I have tried different bitrate, and video encoding - without success. I have found a lot of threads on this forum about NAT problems, "pre-negotiation" and so on, but without solution. Does anyone has successfull expirience of using DSS? Which config settings can help me? Here are links to small movies (nearly 40kb) rtsp://195.159.124.96:80/small_h263.3gp rtsp://195.159.124.96:80/small_mp4_noopt.3gp that doesn't work. Even standard movies from DSS install (rtsp://195.159.124.96:80/sample_50kbit.3gp) doesn't works. Would you be so kind to test this links. Now I have 2 ideas: bad format of files and bad config settings. But somehow I can see video on some devices. Here are links to file that I trying to stream (It has hint tracks and seemed Ok), and config file (almost default settings). http://necromant.zomi.net/small_h263.3gp http://necromant.zomi.net/streamingserver.xml I really have no ideas (( any ideas are welcome (maybe some ideas about methods of investigation of this problem).\ |

Some addition.
It seems to me that problem is connected with firewalls.. Unfortunatelly I can't use sniffer to explore traffic from swedish tv to mobile. But.. When using PC version of Real Player it tries to establish rtsp connection providing client ports (DESCRIBE, SETUP), but than see that it can't receive packets on these ports. Then try to establish http tunneled connection and it will work. Mobile player simply trying to establish connection to the specified client ports (SETUP). And waiting for packets to this ports (which of course doesn't reach him because of the firewalls). The question is how to fix this. How to make mobile players send http tunelled resquests and receive data through this connection. Very interesting question. I don't know solution now.. |

Problem was connected with out firewall that do not allow UDP traffic.
But after enabling ports on firewal occurs problems with bitrate... I can't see video in movies with bitrate for example 50 kbits. Audio plays, but no video. Big delays, buffering, stuttering.. 20 kbits played ok. More interesting that movies from other sites with bitrate more then 50 kbits are played on mobile ok. And movies with bitrate > 50 kbps that are not played on mobile correctly played on PC without problems (I finally make all settings on PC correct so that movies play only over UDP). Here is link to small video clip fragment so if you have some free time please try it and wrote results here. rtsp://195.159.124.96:554/sat_def.3gp |

Hi - your example doesn't seems to work anymore, but I have similar problems with DSS and Nokia. Using latest DSS and Mp4Box i was finally able to stream to Nokia phones (like N90), but playback quality is not quite great. Especially for higher bitrate samples. Compared to SE mobiles it is significantly worse. If anyone have idea how to adjust DSS settings to work better with Nokia's RealPlayer, it would be cool

Hi,
I want to use Darwin Streaming with nokia phones, too, but I am freshman. Would you please share some experience with me ,which will help me a lot. My email is oreochen30@yahoo.com.cn . Thanks a lot! |

Nothing special, we use DSS 5.5.4 on Windows (we experienced some problems with Perl intergration, but finally it works). For mobile streaming we use low bitrate 3gp files (either audio only, or audio/video), hinted with MP4Box tool.

Could one of you guy's post an example .wml (wap) file which has video links in it? I'd like to figure out how that works. I too am using DSS and .3gp. I'd like to create a mini wap page to test with. So far I haven't been having luck with the links in the .wml code.
thx in advance |

hello,
could your problems have todo with different providers? i tested the jet-stream demo (rtsp://qt1.streamzilla.jet-stream.nl/stef/hk.3gp) with two different german providers: it works fine with t-mobile. but not with vodafone, the block streams from outside their own portal. i have dss running on debian stable, all tests on lan are ok - unfortunately i have not the possibility to test it with mobile. i hope i can manage in near future. now i have some questions abou streaming: - is it possible to stream 3gp with h263 video? - or is streaming always with mp4? - what is a good commercial streaming server software? thank you, regards, mark. |

Hi There,
I was wondering if anyone managed to get the RTSP streaming working with DSS? I'm streaming h263 AMR-NB 3gps hinted using MP4BOX, I'm trying to use port 80, could this be a problem? This URL works on quicktime from my PC but when i try to connect on an E65 on UK Vodafone it cannot connect to the server. rtsp://ntdd2403-2.fm.netbenefit.co.uk/mobo2.3gp If anyone can get that URL working or any advice would be appreciated. Thanks Tom |

Last time I checked Vodafone UK was still blocking all external RTSP from their network. Try another operator or Wifi connection (via DSL or direct to your local) server to test your setup.

Thanks for your reply.
I thought that could be a problem, but i have managed to get streaming to work from the mobile youtube on Vodafone UK. Also i know of various companys offering streaming services accross these networks. Do you think they could be white listed with vodafone to allow streaming? |
|
Yes, I think they might be whitelisted. I haven't tried in the last year at least but when I set up my own Helix Mobile Server for streaming (at Nokia UK) I couldn't access it via Vodafone UK (even on the open internet access point) and could via a WLAN access point connected to a DSL line (and also on Orange open internet access point).
They might have changed the policy but all my connections just timed out. Sorcery |

Yes, mine are just timing out too.
Do you know if any other UK networks allow external RTSP streaming? Thanks for your help, looks like I’ll have to dig up some old network contacts ![]() Tom |

Hi Tom,
Check out our project @ http://www.neoarena.fi We´re used DSS something like two years or something. Currently streaming h263+amr_nb and h264+aac for our mobile viewers. BTW tested your rtsp://ntdd2403-2.fm.netbenefit.co.uk/mobo2.3gp with my N95 and it never opened. Cheked with QT Player and no problem with it. juussi |
