I am developing a Java application that must recognize Barcodes from an image.
My first try was to use the MMAPI. But the images were to blurry for a recognition. So the camera must have auto focus for sharp images. But the JSR-234 API seems not to be implemented in Nokia phones. But this API is needed to control auto focus.

So I want to try something else. Is it possible to pause the Java MIDlet and start the Camera of the Phone? Or will all MIDlets be shut down when starting the camera? Phones from other manufactures (e.g. SonyEricsson K750,... and Motorola V3i) will shutdown any running MIDlet.

This depends on the underlying system. The MIDP spec allows the MIDlet to stay alive or the system terminating it.
On Series 40 phones you won't have multiple applications running at the same time. However on S60 phones the system can keep the MIDlet on the background.
